• The Army

• The Police and

• The Judiciary

The British needed a strong Army to control India.

The army was used to

• Conquer more territories

• Protect British territories from their rivals.

• Suppress internal Revolts against the British.

The Army consisted of Indian soldiers called sepoys most of whom were recruited from the present day states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand.

British officers commanded the sepoys.
