A root word is the “torso” of a word- you can put arms and legs on it that make it into something else, but that root word is the center (though not literally, necessarily).
Examples:
Ambi - means “both” - ambiguous, ambivalent
Cent - means “one hundred” - century, percent
Port - means “to carry” - portable, transportation
Struct - means “to build” - construct, destruct,
