Ganga Action Plan is the project which was launched in 1986 to save the Ganga river from pollution. The objective of this plan was to improve the water quality by interception, diversion and treatment of domestic sewage and present toxic and industrial chemical waste entering the river and polluting its water.

Its main objective was to improve the water quality by the interception, diversion and treatment of domestic sewage and to prevent toxic and industrial chemical wastes from identified polluting units from entering the river.

The Ganga Action Plan launched by the Government of India with much fanfare has failed miserably in its objectives. ... The threat to the ecosystem of Ganga caused by the sewage and industrial effluents was realised by the Government of India in 1986.
