The leather industry of India has developed drastically, changing from a mere a supplier of raw material to a value-added commodity exporter.' Tamil Nadu is the largest state producing leather in India. It estimates around 40 per cent of the total production of the country's leather. Some important centres of leather production in Tamilnadu include Chennai, Ranipet and Erode. Other states involved in the production of leather are Kolkata, Jalanadhar, Delhi, Kanpur,etc. Therefore, the total estimate of India's leather production in the context of the world is around 12.93 %.

leather industry has existed in India since the ancient times . Raw material for leather is obtained by removing the skin of the dead animals which is processed thereafter . In the ancient and medival period , leather was used for making 'masak' (water container) , musical instruments like drum , dholak and the Bellow used by the blacksmith .In present time , travel items , shore's ,chappals , parses and belt are made from leather . India exports leather goods to many countries .
