The magnetic compass is the most familiar compass type. It functions as a pointer to "magnetic north", the local magnetic meridian, because the magnetized needle at its heart aligns itself with the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic field.

Magnetic compass has a small magnetic needle enclosed in a glass case where the needle is pivoted at the centre so tjat it can move freely. When placed on a plane surface , it always comes to rest in a N-S direction . Thus it is used to find directions.
