Humor and Wisdom
“Recession is when your neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose yours.” -Ronald Reagan This quote is actually a perfect example of how wisdom and humor go hand in glove. And here is how, according to Hugh Prather (famous for his first book, Notes to Myself), which sold over 5 million copies, true humor works: “True humor is fun – it does not put down, kid, or mock. It makes people feel wonderful, not separate, different, and cut off. True humor has beneath it the understanding that we are all in this together.” —Hugh Prather. As is evident by this quote, the concept of true humor is a wise one. But first, we must also define wisdom. Here is how Merriam Webster defines it: Wisdom is: knowledge that is gained by having many experiences in life
Wisdom is: the natural ability to understand things that most other people cannot understand
Wisdom is: knowledge of what is proper or reasonable : good sense or judgment The above definition is more like a description of qualities required for humor, wouldn’t you agree? Thus, another similarity. All these similarities do point to something, let’s see what… Actually, many really wise men have often used humor to convey their important, life-changing messages. Many of us watched the movie The Karate Kid. The original one. Remember Mr. Miyagi- Wasn’t he very humorous? But, he was also very wise. While Mr. Miyagi is a good on screen example, a real life example would be Mr. Bill Cosby. Mr. Bachchan, a very wise man, also utilizes humor many times in his interactions. Thus, we can say that wise men use humor.
