WHERE THE MIND IS WITHOUT FEAR and the head is held high;

 where knowledge is free;

 where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;

 where words come out from the depths of truth. where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;

where clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary sand of dead habit.

where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action;

into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

MEANING: In this poem Tagore draws an ideal picture of free India. It is a sort of prayer. The poet prays to God to awaken his country a dawn of freedom. In free India, people should be fearless and proud of their motherland. Education should be free for all. There should be no distinction on the basis of caste and religion. People should be truthful and perfection should be their aim. People should follow reason, not blind customs. They should be guided by God. They should get rid of old customs and conventions. They should march on the road of progress and prosperity.

SUMMARY:

This poem is from his English selections of "GITANJALI"
He has written this poem keeping in mind the British Rule and expressed his views how to keep one's head high as we are very knowledgeable and that the same need not be suppressed by narrow ideas.The British rule has robbed India of it's pride.
He expresses that we are people of great intelligence and knowledge and hence should keep our head high.The words of truth are spoken from the depth of the heart and spoken out for the world to hear.They are expressed without fear and with courage.
He wants everyone to work for themselves or the nation and are free to work without fear or strive tirelessly till they reach the goals and with complete satisfaction.He wanted the people to forget the age old practices and come into reality of reasoning with scientific application.This is the only way India can achieve freedom and was praying ALMIGHTY to help her realize the dream and destiny.
