It is said that, "Cleanliness is next to Godliness". Cleanliness is important to remain healthy. Many germs breed in dirty surroundings and cause diseases. So it is very essential to keep our surroundings clean. Cleanliness is also necessary for a pure and healthy mind. Every religion emphasizes the need to clean the body, mind and surroundings before performing worship. So in order to be close to Divinity we have to be clean and keep our surroundings clean.
Our school building is very old. It is very big and has a number of classrooms. There is a big playground. There is a lab, a library and a hostel for boarders. Besides this there is a canteen also. The building is used by nearly 1500 students everyday from 7 am to 5 pm. It is also used for some social purposes on Sundays. So it is very essential to keep it very clean.
The cleanliness week is approaching. So let us make plans to clean the school in a systematic way. Firstly let us purchase all the necessary equipment like brooms, mops, baskets and other cleaning items for the purpose. Let us divide all the students into different groups. They can work under their respective teacher. The teachers can explain to them the necessity of cleanliness and give detailed instructions about the work to be done.
On the first day all the groups will work in the main building. They will clean the classrooms, open all the cupboards, take out all the things and clean and rearrange them. The useless things should be discarded. The corridors should be cleaned thoroughly.
Next day we will work in the playground. All the swings will be cleaned. The sports equipment should be cleaned and arranged in an orderly manner. We will sweep the area and remove the pile of garbage which has accumulated since a long time.
In the following days we will clean the lab, then the library and the canteen. Like this we will clean one part of the school every day. On the eighth day the school will be spic and span. We shall be thrilled to see our marvellous work.
Mr Chairman Sir,
Let us draw inspiration from the Prime Minister’s call for cleaning up our country. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, if adopted across our homes, localities, schools, colleges, parks and other public places, will make India a better place to live in. The gain will primarily be two-fold : (i) the country will look more beautiful, and (ii) we should be able to drive diseases away. I’m sure everyone sitting here would agree to put their mite in India’s cause.
Ladies and gentlemen, let us immediately start from our homes by trying to keep our premises clean. Children ought to be taught not to throw chocolate wrappers or waste paper around. Bins need to be placed where such stuff can be thrown and these need to be emptied out on a regular basis. People living in multi-storied complexes should not throw any kind of waste from their windows. Taking such baby steps will go a long way in making the bigger mission of ‘cleaning up’ the country into a grand success.
Mr Chairman, as I leave the podium, I would like to remind everyone present here of the adage, ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness’. Let this be the trigger for us- ‘Let’s clean up’.
Thank you.
