It portrays the meaning of a very particular kind of life. American culture at the height of the cold war and what we now know was the beginning of the end of the Industrial Revolution. This was an America that still believed in the “American Dream.” Men were self-made and were only as small as they allowed themselves to be, or so the story goes. The play can be read as a commentary on the ways in which Willie Loman lived his American Dream yet could not live with the results of those life choices. His extramarital affair and the hours the job took away from his being a father and a husband resulted in his alienation from his wife and children. In a larger sense, life is the decisions we make.
