If Wishes Were Horses Beggars Would Ride

Bhanu lived with his father in Bilasnagar which was famous for gold mines. His father worked in a mine and managed his expenses in his meager salary. When Bhanu completed four years, he went to a nearby school and got him admitted there. But Bhanu was very lazy. When his father went to work on the mine, he came back from school and whiled away his time. His father could never force him as he didn't want to pressurize the motherless child who was looking after himself. Slowly years rolled by and he attained adulthood. He still shirked working, but dreamed big.

His father was becoming weak with age and he wanted Bhanu to settle in life. So, he asked him if he would work in the mines where he worked. Bhanu simply refused, for working in mines required hard work. At the same time, he wanted to make a fortune which was impossible without the willingness to work. So, his father took him to a sage who lived in a nearby forest. The sage looked at Bhanu and asked what he wished. He told the sage that he wanted to be millionaire. The sage asked Bhanu the meaning of 'If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.' When he couldn't answer, the sage explained him with the example of his life how he had suffered in his own life due to his laziness and how he was helped by a wise man in his town. Bhanu came very close to him and asked him to let Bhanu touche his feet and sought his blessings. He resolved to work in the mine and be independent.

The phrase “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride” is used to mean that if all wishes came true every time, no one will ever be deprived of anything.

A poor little girl lived with her grandmother in a small hut on the outskirts of the city. They earned their day to day living by selling the pancakes that the grandmother made daily. Although the girl longed to go to the nearby city school, she could not afford to do so with her grandmother’s earnings. Every day as she stepped out to sell the pancakes, she would look at the school and the children going there with longing eyes.

The grandmother knew her granddaughter’s desire but could not help her. One day, she started crying when she thought about this. When the girl came back after selling the pancakes, she saw tears in her grandmother’s eyes. After asking her grandmother the reason, she consoled the grandmother saying that one day her wish would come true. The girl also told the grandmother that not everyone’s wish gets fulfilled all the time. If that happened, people will have no want for anything.
