The day was a gloomy one. Me and my friend, Rohan were exploring the wood not far from our house. The winter weather had made crops scarce and we were scouting for fruits and berries.

All of a sudden, a blood-curdling scream tore through the still air. Rohan and I froze in terror. When the cries continues only to soften to whimpers, I decided enough was enough. I set out in the direction of the sound to find the animal. When we reached a clearing we were shocked at what we saw. A tiny leopard cub no bigger than my arm was lying on the grass. It had an arrow protruding from its body.

I was both shocked and disgusted. How could people be so desparately selfish that they try to murder something so small and innocent? A faraway tramping warned me that the hunter was coming in to gather his kill. I approached the cub cautiously but quickly. I picked up its tiny body, trying to block out its piteous cries and quickly hurried away. Behind me, my friend made a trail with the blood, making it look like the animal had dragged itself to safely.

Hearing a rustle in the bushes, I realised the mother was near. Not wanting to take a risk. I quickly picked the shaft of the arrow clean from the wound and bathed it. Then, I set the small creature on a rock and backed away behind some bushes. A few seconds later, the mother emerged, and what ensued was a very happy reunion.

I turned away towards home with a satisfied smile. I may not have got anything to fill my tummy tonight, but the forest had given me something for my heart
