India doesn’t need compulsory military training. Indian Army has always been volunteer army and today it is the largest all volunteer army in the world. India neither have conscription nor mandatory service.
These days many countries are their army into volunteer army. Even nations like France which started the concept of modern conscription has now all volunteer army. The era of conscription is almost gone but many nations still have mandatory military training or services. Even many European countries have either draft system or conscription or mandatory military training. Countries like Israel or Finland or Iran may have necessity that all of their citizens should have military training. But that is not the case with India. Our Army is 2nd largest in the world and we don’t need a bigger army.
In modern warfare, there is less emphasis on overall number of troops. Major Armies like Peoples Liberation Army (China), British, French, Russian Army has decreased its manpower count in last 1-2 decades. Even India is at a junction where it needs to decide whether it should decrease its manpower to put more money in military modernization. Indian Army has halved its manpower of upcoming mountain strike corps and the money would be used in purchasing equipment. Even if there is one year mandatory year of military training, India would lose one year of productivity per young person. At this crucial junction, we can’t afford to lose such huge manpower.
And why would we need a trained manpower of half a billion people. India doesn’t need such a large manpower. I don’t see a scenario in which an Indo-China war would last for 2-3 years as modern warfare may not last so long in any case. And in case war prolongs, India can quickly build very huge Army like British & Americans did in 2nd world war.
