Take a heavy box on a plain surface.
When you try to push it alone, you won't be able to do it as the force you apply would not be more than the friction, But when you and 3 other guys push it, the net force would be ( Total force of 4 guys - friction) and thus you can overcome friction which will then become the net force.
Now take the same box on a plain frictionless surface. When you and another guy of same strength as yours stand at the opposite sides of the box, you would not be able to push it as the net force would be zero due to the cancellation of equal forces in opposite directions, But when there are 2 guys in your opposite, the net force would be in their side and they can push it.
Hope all this typing helped.
