Electron distribution in a sodium atom and a sodium ion

Explanation:

Atomic number of sodium = 11

Electronic configuration is 2,8,1

when it loses it outermost electron  to become a Na^+

it becomes a sodium ion

The sodium ion still has a 11 protons

therefore , The atomic number of sodium ion is also 11 but having 10 electrons
