The lions that are shown on our currency notes represent the four lions carved in stone, and placed on top of a massive stone pillar at Sarnath. The significance of Sarnath is that it was the place where Buddha taught for the first time after attaining enlightenment. On instructions of Ashoka these lions were carved in Sarnath as King Ashoka had himself turned to Buddhism after the Kalinga war.
