Answer:-

As we know potential energy = work done.

Consider a body with mass m, raised through a height h, from the ground.

Then,

Potential energy(P.E)=F.S \:

Here force acting on the body is its weight

which is equal to

w = mg=F

Substituting in potential energy equation

Potential energy(P.E)=mg.S

here S is Height raised as it is the displacement,

Potential energy(P.E)=mgh

Hence proved.

P.E=mgh

To show that PE = mgh

Potential Energy = Amount of Work Done

But, Work Done = Fs (Force × Displacement)

→Potential Energy = Fs

As the body is in free fall,s = h and F = mg

PE = mgh
