What is Sound?

  • Sound is a vibration that typically propagates as an audible wave of pressure through a transmission medium.
  • Sound waves are mechanical longitudinal waves.

In the given diagram, we can see the alternate contraction and rarefaction of the medium molecules.

How are sound waves propagated or how does it reach our ears?

What happens is :-

✍ The object which produces sound starts vibrating the nearby medium molecules and then these medium molecules pass the vibration to its nearby molecules. This process continues till we hear the sound produced in our ears.

✍ If we don't have any medium for the vibration of the sound molecules to pass, sound waves won't be propagated!

Therefore, this explanation is the proof that sound always needs a medium to travel.

★ Note ☞ Sound doesn't travel through air/ vacuum!
