Carbon is an element having 6 electons and it have 4 Electrons in its outermost shell. (el. Conf.=2,4)

thus it has 4 valency and thats why it do not gives nor takes 4 electrons and thus forms covalent bonds.

thus it have 4 valency thus it is called TETRAVALENT.
