show that the points (0,-1), (-2,3), (6, 7), and (8,3),taken in order are the vertices of a rectangle. Also find its area.

Let the given points be A(0,-1),B(6,7), C(-2,3),D(8,3).

Using distance formula, we get,

AD = 4 (root 5)

BC = 4 (root 5)

AB = 10

CD = 10

AC = 2 (root 5)

BD = 2 (root 5)

 

Therefore,

AD = BC, AB = CD and AC = BD

 

Hence, ABCD is a rectangle.

Area of the rectangle = AB x AD = 40 (root 5) sq units
