Solution,

The electronic configuration of magnesium is 2,8,2

The electronic configuration of chlorine is 2,8,7

Magnesium will act as donor atom while chlorine act as accepter atom. Magnesium transfers its two electrons to two chlorine atom and it forms ionic bond. The attached figure shows the transfer of electrons. As a result, MgCl_2 forms.
