MgCl₂ , whose name is Magnesium Chloride is formed by reaction of a metal (Mg) and a non-metal (Cl) to form an ionic compound (MgCl₂).

The ions present in this compound are Mg²⁺ and Cl⁻. This shows that Mg has a two positive charge achieved by losing two electrons and Cl has a negative charge achieved by gaining an electron.

The transfer of electrons is shown in the attachment.
