Sodium and chlorine contain one and seven electrons, respectively, in their outermost shells. Hence, sodium transfers its one electron to chlorine atom and their octets get stabilised. In a sodium chloride molecule, sodium atom transfers its one electron to chlorine atom to form an ionic bond.
