<b><i>Heya!!!

Answer to your question:

Let total number of students who appeared for the exam be x.

Students who passed=91%
Students who failed=(100-91)%=9%

According to question,
9% of x=8820
9/100*x=8820
x=8820*100/9
x=98,000

Students who appeared for the exam =98,000

Students who passed the exam=91%of x=91/100 *98000=89,180

Hope it helps ^_^

Let the total number of students appeared for the exam be a

Number of students passed the exam = 91 % of a

= 91a/100

Now,

Number of students passed + Number of students failed = Total number of students

=> 91a/100 + 8820 = a

=> a - 91a/100 = 8820

=> 9a/100 = 8820

=> a = 882000 / 9

=> a = 98000

Total number of students appeared in exam = 98000

Number of students passed = 91 × 98000/100

= 91 × 980

= 89180
