Lets assume to the contrary that /5 is rational.
Then there must exist co prime a and b such that
 \sqrt{5} = \frac{a}{b}
 = b \sqrt{5} = a
(b \sqrt{5} )^{2} = (a)^{2}
5 {b}^{2} = {a}^{2}
Therefore 5 divides a square.
So 5 must divide a.
Similarly 5 divides b...
But a and b are co prime....
This equation thus contradicts...
This contradiction has arisen due to our incorrect assumption that root 5 is rational
