Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote "Rajmohan's Wife" which was the first English novel written by an Indian author. The protagonist of the novel is Matangini who is the wife of Rajmohan. She was a revolutionary woman who has been regarded as a symbol of purity. She has been symbolized as the Bharat Mata of India. At the same time, the title is significant of the fact that the position of a woman is always behind the man. The name and the identity of the woman do not have significance until it gets attached to the name and identity of the man. Also, it symbolizes the authority which a husband possesses over his wife.
Significance of the title Rajmohan's wife:
The important significance of this novel is that, the women of India which is a symbol of purity should not be touched by the British men but Rajmohan’s wife who is in love with her brother-in-low and wanted to run away for her husband and to keep stand for what is right for her. This section describes the freedom for the women where as in the other section that describes the life of Matangini who is married and always beaten by his husband and suffering from their own marriage. Another important aspect about this novel is that writer of this novel wanted to ignite a fire in the heart of the youth to fight for freedom of India.
