The silicate structures are the tetrahedron silicon - oxygen (SiO4)4-. They are surrounded by 4 oxygen atoms and consists of  

consists of a several central silicon atom in the shape of a tetrahedron which they are surrounded by four oxygen atoms.

Silicates contains Si2O76 ions which is formed by joining the 2 tetrahedral (SiO4)4-. Which is used to share one oxygen atom at one corner.  These tetrahedral SiO4 units can share and connect oxygen atoms in a variety of ways, resulting in different structures.
