Silicon hexafluoride ion is known while silicon hexa chloride ion is not known.Why ?

Explanation:

It is known that fluorine is smaller in size as compared to chlorine atom. So, a silicon atom is able to accommodate six fluorine atoms around itself.

Whereas due to large size chlorine atoms are not able to accommodate around silicon because inter electron repulsions occur. Hence, chlorine atoms move away from each other and therefore, SiCl_{6} molecule becomes unstable in nature.

Hence, SiCl_{6} ias not known whereas SiF_{6} is known.
