Silk is produced from the cocoon of silk worm. The silkworm from which silk is reared by humans is scientifically called Bombyx Mori.

When a silkworm has eaten enough during its larva stage of life, it moves forward to create a cocoon around it, entering into the pupa stage.

In this stage, it remains motionless inside the pupa, developing into a fully grown silk moth.

But for silk rearing, it is boiled and killed before outgrowing the pupa stage of life. Its cocoon is processed to produce silk.
