Silver oxide decomposes when heated to give silver and oxygen: If 0.5 moles of lunar caustic is heated up to 450°C, giving out nitrogen dioxide and oxygen leaving silver as metal, what is the mass of the residue?

The balanced chemical equation for the decomposition of silver nitrite.

2AgNO_{3} (s)--> 2Ag(s)+2NO_{2}(g) +O_{2}(g)

Lunar caustic is also known as Silver  nitrite.

Given 0.5 moles of lunar caustic (AgNO_{3})

Calculating the  moles of silver  formed when silver nitrite is decomposed

(0.5 mol AgNO_{3})*(1 mol Ag/1 mol AgNO_{3})*(107.87 g Ag/mol)

=53.93 g  of Ag
