In such a case it is not possible to separate the components by fractional distillation. There are two types of azeotropes: minimum boiling azeotrope and maximum boiling azeotrope.

• Azeotropes : they are binary mixtures having the same composition in liquid and vapour phase and boil at constant temperature.
• there are two types of azeotropes, namely minimum boiling azeotropes and maximum boiling azeotropes.
•the solution which shows a large positive deviation from roults law form minimum boiling azeotropes at a specific composition. Example : ethanol - water mixture.
•the solution that shows large negative deviation from roults law form maximum boiling azeotropes.
Example : nitric acid - water.
