Experiment :

Wash clothes using soap in the water.

If it is hard water, a white substance form on the clothes.

It will also be difficult to produce foam..

Meaning the water does not lather easily with soap.

If it is soft water, the water lathers easily with soap.

Softening temporary hard water:

By heating with soda ash, we get precipitates of Calcium carbonate and Magnesium carbonate which are then filtered out so that we remain with soft water.

ADVANTAGES OF DETERGENT OVER SOAP

Detergents contain chemicals that are not affected by the Magnesium and Calcium ions present in the hard water thus they provide effective washing.

On the other hand fatty acid in soaps react with the Magnesium and Calcium ions to form an insoluble substance hence less effective.
