Simple filamentous algae are threadlike algae which grow along the bottom in water or attached to the structures that are present in water such as rocks or aquatic plants or present as free floating. Its filaments consists of series of cells which are joined end to end and form a thread like appearance. This form of algae are green, cottony, slimy or coarse in texture.
Examples:
i. Spirogyra which is bright green and slimy.
ii. Cladophora which is cottony and can form balls.
iii. Pithophora is known as horsehair algae because of its coarse texture.
