We know, that (x+y)^2-2xy=x^2+y^2

So. (a+b)^2+(a-b)^2 = [(a+b)+(a-b)]^2-2(a-b)(a+b)

=(2a)^2-2(a^2-b^2)

=4a^2-2(a^2-b^2)

=2(a^2+b^2)
