Since humans do not have gills, we cannot extract oxygen from water. Some fish can live for a while out of water, i.e.: walking catfish. However, most of them suffocate, because their gills collapse when out of the water. ... Gills don't work outside water so they can't breathe.​

The gills are specially designed for breathing underwater. But animals like frog can breathe through there skin so the can survive out of water
