Complete question:

Since the atomic weights of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen are 12, 14 and 16 respectively, among the following pairs of gases, the pair that will diffuse at the same rate is :

(1) Carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide

(2) Carbon dioxide and nitrogen peroxide

(3) Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide

(4) Carbon dioxide and nitric oxide

Complete Answer:

The pair that will diffuse at the same rate is :

(1) Carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide

- The gases that have the same molecular mass at identical conditions will diffuse at the same rate.

- The molecular mass of carbon dioxide (CO2) = 12 + 16 + 16 = 44 gm

- The molecular mass of nitrous oxide (N2O) = 14 + 14 + 16 = 44 gm

- The molecular mass of nitrogen peroxide (N2O2) = 14 + 14 + 16 + 16 = 60 gm

- The molecular mass of carbon monoxide (CO) = 12 + 16 = 28  gm

- The molecular mass of Nitric oxide (NO) = 14 + 16 = 30 gm

- As CO2 and N2O have same molecular mass, hence they will diffuse at same rate.
