$\huge {Solution}$ :-

Let the number be x

One third of a number = $\dfrac{1}{3}$x = $\dfrac{x}{3}$

Six more than one third of a number = $\dfrac{x}{3}$ + 6

Their sum = 3


Accoeding to the question,

$\dfrac{x}{3}$ + 6 = 3

Multiplying both sides by 3 we get,

x + 18 = 9

Moving constant to the right, we get,

x = 9 - 18

By calculation, we get,

x = -9



∴ The number is -9



Verification :-

$\dfrac{x}{3}$ + 6 = 3

=> $\dfrac{-9}{3}$ + 6 = 3

=> -3 + 6 = 3

=> 3 = 3

LHS = RHS ✔✔




∴ The number is -9
