In metaphase 1 of an animal cell the bivalents (pairs of chromosomes) are fully condensed. They fully align themselves on the metaphase plates in between the poles through a process commonly known as meiosis. During the Meiosis process, the meiotic spindle fibres are formed and one chromosome is attached to fibres originating from one pole and the other chromosome attaches to fibres of the opposite pole.
