The height of a cone is 30 cm. From its topside a small cone is cut by a plane parallel to its base. If volume of smaller cone is \frac{1}{27} of the given cone, then at what height it is cut from its base?

Let the radius and height of larger and smaller cone be: R ,H and r,h

V1=27v2

=>1/3©R^2*H=27*1/3*©r^2*h

(©=PI)

=>R^2*30=27r^2h

r^2h/30R^2=1/27 .......(I)


SINCE THE CONE IS CUT PARALLEL

SO 2 CONES ARE SIMILAR=>r/R=h/H

=>r/R=h/30.....(ii)


FRom eqn 1 and 2

(r^2/R^2)*h=1/27

(h/30)^2*h=1./27

h^3/30^3=1/27

h/30=1/3

h=10m



hence the cone is cut 20 m above base of big cone
