When Rosalind was banished by her uncle, she along with her cousin, Celia, plan to go to the Forest of Arden. Rosalind adopts the name Ganymede, (name of a youth from Greek mythology) to keep her identity a secret.
In the forest she meets Orlando, to who she has lost her heart when she has first seen him in the court. Orlando, struck with love for Rosalind, hangs messages on trees, proclaiming his love for her. Rosalind continues playing the role of Ganymede and offers her help to Orlando, in the garb of Ganymede. She playfully woos Orlando and asks him to imagine her as Rosalind and enjoys the passion of Orlando for her.
Ganymede is quick-witted and smart and beleives in bringing lovers together. When Silvius is love-struck by the shepherd girl Phoebe, Ganymede brings them both together by changing the arrogant Phoebe to love Silvius.
Ganymede, till the end of the play, does not reveal her identity and plays along her role and enjoys it thoroughly.
The pastoral comedy "As You Like It" is written by the greatest playwright of Elizabethan era, William Shakespeare. His one of the most wonderful heroines, Rosalind, goes to the Forest of Arden for exile.
She disguised herself as Ganymede while her niece disguised herself as the sister of Ganymede. She leaves her Uncle to follow her banished father and finds her devoted lover, Orlando.
The character of Ganymede or Rosalind is rather striking. She is the most independent and witty female protagonist Shakespeare has ever portrayed in his comedies. Her resilience and the ability of decision-making at the right moment is extraordinary. She is a honest, faithful, strong-willed friend and partner.
