The most pitiable character in the play "Oedipus King" appears to be the Queen Jocasta who is initially compelled to abandon her sole child in mountains as the Oracle has prophesied the Child as a threat to King's life.
The ordeal of relinquishing one's own child as a mother is a heart-wrenching task to execute. Secondly, she unknowingly gets married to her own son after the murder of her husband. As a whole, the character of Queen Jocasta is fate bound with very limited free will to respond or act.
