A simply supported beam of length 3 m is applied with a point load of 5 kN at the middle
of beam and having cross section of 50 mm( width)x80 mm (height). Calculate the
maximum transverse shear stress acting on the beam cross-section.

1250 kN/sq.m. is the shear stress

Explanation:

  • Given W = 5kN, Section = 50mm x 80mm

  • Shear stress T = F/A where F is applied force and A is the cross-sectional area

  • we have F = 5 kN = 5000 N
  • we have A = 50mm x 80mm = 0.004 sq.m.

  • Therefore T = F/A = (5000/0.004) =  1250000 N/sq.m.
  • therefore shear stress is 1250 kiloPascal
