Small intestine, yet such a long organ! What is the need for such a long-coiled organ? Why then is large intestine called so?

The large length of the small intestine gives a sufficient time to the body to digest the food and extract maximum nutrition while the numerous finger like projections called villi along with micro-villi increase the surface area for absorption.

The large intestine is about six feet long — much shorter than the small intestine, which is 22 feet. It's called the large intestine because it's wider — about three inches, while the small intestine is only one inch in diameter.
