Britain, France, Ireland and Russia were part of an alliance called the Triple Entente, while Germany aligned itself with Austria-Hungary – known as the Central Powers. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on 28th June 1914, it triggered a chain of events that resulted in World War 1.

The First World War

In the year 1914, War broke out between two European alliances -Germany, Austria and Turkey were known as Central powers .France, Britain and Russia were on the other side .

  • In the Western front of the war, armies fought from the trenches
  • With fast movement of armies, Russia lost badly in Germany and Austria by 1916
  • When the Russians retreated they created much damage to buildings and crops
  • This was mainly done due to prevention of enemy entering their region
  • As a result, Germany cut off the supplies to Russia
  • They broke railway network too
  • Industries could not run due to lack of raw materials
  • Unemployment problem arose and people starved
  • With the intervention of America, German power collapsed and thus, First World War came to an end by Treaty of Versailles
