SMALL STEPS OF FUEL CONSERVATION CAN MAKE A BIG CHANGE
Non-renewable fuel resource is one of the most important natural resources burnt to obtain heat energy, light energy etc. Non-renewable fuels are mainly the fossil fuels, which are obtain from the Earth (they are not man-made or made artificially). These fuels are available only in limited quantities making them ‘one of the most expensive natural resources’.
Fossil fuels are remains of the dead plants and animals buried deep under the Earth’s crust. Fossil fuels like Petroleum, Coal, Natural gas, Oil etc. power our life. These fuels are not only used in factories, but also at homes in the kitchens. Now-a-days, these resources are being used in large numbers and large amounts. For example, it takes almost twenty-six tons of raw petroleum to produce just one litre of gas. It takes millions of years to form fuel, hence they are called non-renewable resources. But, in the recent years, fuel is being exploited faster than it is being renewed. In fact, 85% of all the energy we consume is produced and provided by the combustion of fuels.
If this act is encouraged, the fossil fuels would soon vanish from the Earth and it will take about three hundred million years to appear again on Earth. Hence, we should start taking steps to conserve fuel before it vanishes from our planet.
We should reduce the usage of vehicles that consume petroleum fuels. We should ride bicycles and/or walk to travel small distances. This will reduce the usage of fuels and also pollution as burning of petrol and diesel will not happen. We can also replace our vehicles with a car that runs on electricity or go for carpooling, or travel in buses to travel long distances.
We can also use solar-powered or hydro-powered (hydroelectric) machines and panels in our kitchens to cook food. Turbines powered by water-flow produce a lot of electricity which can be used to provide electricity to not only a village, but also an entire country! As electricity is usually produced by burning of fuels, this method of using hydro-power can help us to conserve fuel.
Scientists are working on different types of vehicles that do not use fossil fuels (like Petrol) to power themselves. We can also use vehicles powered by water, which is being manufactured in few countries. We can use a gravity car which uses the simple law of Physics.
Solar energy has become popular in places that get a lot of sun heat. Solar-powered vehicles can also help us to travel even long distances. Use of ACs and Geysers that run on electricity should be stopped or reduced and instead, Solar Geyser should be used. We can also use fans instead of ACs.
If we take a step ahead to conserve fuels now, we can save our upcoming generations. As the human population is gradually increasing, the rate of consumption of energy is also increasing, but according to a study, if the rate of consumption rises even 5%, there would be less than one hundred nineteen years of supply (of fossil fuels) left. Also, according to the current statistics, Coal would last for two hundred ten years, Natural gas for sixty years and Oil would last only for forty-two years from now.
In our atmosphere, there is already a huge hole in our Ozone layer, a layer of atmosphere that protects us from harmful UV rays. This is becoming dangerous day by day. Also, during the combustion of fuels, harmful gases and toxic elements, and greenhouse gas (Carbon Dioxide) is emitted in large amounts. This leads to Greenhouse Effect, which in turn causes Global Warming, which is the main cause of the rising of the sea level and overall temperature of Earth.
If we continue to exploit our natural resources, in the upcoming centuries, the life on the Earth would start to turn extinct and reach such a stage that it will become difficult to sustain life on the Earth. Our planet was once called the ‘Green Planet’ and is still seems to be same, but if the exploitation of our natural resources is continued, our planet would no longer be called ‘Green’. Thus, we should start conserving our natural resources.
So let’s take a SMALL step to save our BIG planet.
