A ceramic car engine was developed several decades ago. Because it was not subject to thermal expansion as are steel engines the engine could run at much higher temperatures minimizing the need for heat dissipation systems and increasing energy conversion. That means significantly improved mileage. On the order of 100 mpg, as I recall.
The engine’s flaw is that it is subject to cracking on impact. But, as modern engine compartments are engineered to accordion on impact to absorb the forces and protect the passenger compartment this is no longer a serious problem. And newer ceramics can tolerate even higher heats than those available at the time.
Now the excuse for not using this technology appears to be the need to retool factories.
