This is a touching story of an extraordinary relationship of a faithful dog and his master Chuck and how Duke helped his master to recover after a serious accident.
Chuck Hooper was a young and successful sales manager in a hard charging zone of a chemical company. He had an impressive personality and loved and respected by his colleagues. One day while returning home he met with a bad accident when a car suddenly put him up in front of him withput any indication. He was taken to the hospitql anr diagnosed with subdural haemorrhage in the motor section of his brain which paralysed the left side of his body.
Marcy, his wife, was informed by a friend and took her to the hospital.
Duke was sent to the kennel because their was no one to look after him.
A few days later when Chuck returned home from hospital he was excited but soon hit a new low as Marcy went to work and he was alone in the house in his own thoughts. So it was decided to bring Duke back.
When Duke camr back Chuck wanted to stand up and recieve him. Tje dog was so excited to see his master that he jumped on him like a missile of joy. Chuck found it difficult to keep hus balance but he managed.
Duke understood it that his master was in pain and never jumped on him ever again. Duke would rest on the floor beside his master as if he was given a duty. Both stared at each other as could not be done. Boredom was beginning to set in. Duke couldn't take it anymore and decided to bring his master again on his feets.
He poked his pointed nose under Chuck's elbow and tried to lift it. He repeated this act several times until one evening Hooper casually hooked the leash onto Duke's collar to hold him still with his good hand. It was like a magical moment for Duke. No sooner had Chuck done this than Duke stared prancing and pulling Chuck to his feet.
With much effort, Chuck took a few steps but then fell on tje wheelchair. Dule was cautious and pulled the leash to prevent the fall. The dog egg his master each day to make an effort to walk. They started early the next day and Chuck walking a couple of steps. By two weels tje dog has helped his master walk up to the front porch.
With Duke on his side, Chuck didn't need any physiotherapy anymore. Duke was better than them.
In January, Hooper surprised everyone by walking 200 miles by himself to tje local branch office of his company. Hooper told the manager that he would be attending office for an hour each day. Seeing his determined expression the staff could not pick up tje courage to tell him that he could handle his old job. Meanwhile, Chuck had already set his objectives and decided to work for full day by March. Hooper was able to met his targets.
Starting with an hour work he slowly increased his timings to a full day. His work was appreciated and he was given a promotion as regional manager. The family had to relocate in the new city. One day, when a party was going on, Duke was hit by a vehicle and sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to the hospital but sadly nothing could be done.
A few weeks later, Chuck recieved a letter from his company. The letter was worded as if it were a tribute to Duke. It read "......therefore, to advance our objectives step-by-step, Charles Hooper is appointed Assistant National Sales Manager."
