The smallest bone in human is stapes.

  • The middle ear contains three bones namely, maleus ,incus and stapes.

  • Stapes is located in the middle ear.

  • There are 2 stapes bone, one in each ear.

  • It is also called stir up bone.

  • It is a small bone

  • Its length is 0.3 cm

  • Medially it is attached to oval window of inner ear.

  • Laterally , it is attached to incus bone by incudostapedial joint.

  • The function of stapes is to transmit the vibrations from incus to the oval window.

  • A muscle called stapedius is attached to stabilize the bone.

  • The surgical procedure of replacing stapes with artificial prosthesis is called stapedectomy.
