The smallest bone in human is stapes.
- The middle ear contains three bones namely, maleus ,incus and stapes.
- Stapes is located in the middle ear.
- There are 2 stapes bone, one in each ear.
- It is also called stir up bone.
- It is a small bone
- Its length is 0.3 cm
- Medially it is attached to oval window of inner ear.
- Laterally , it is attached to incus bone by incudostapedial joint.
- The function of stapes is to transmit the vibrations from incus to the oval window.
- A muscle called stapedius is attached to stabilize the bone.
- The surgical procedure of replacing stapes with artificial prosthesis is called stapedectomy.
