In the plant kingdom, different types of this pigment are present in different groups, but Chlorophyll-a type is universally present and is responsible for the primary photochemical reaction which converts radiation (SOLAR -LIGHT ) energy into chemical energy. It is a large molecule having two main parts - a tetrapyrollic porphyrin ring and a long phytol tail attached to it. Porphyrin ring has Mg (Magnesium) atom in the centre. (Surprisingly blood’s pigment haemoglobin too has a porphyrin ring but there is Fe(Iron) atom in the centre.
