Answer: carbon
Explanation: Smelting is the process of extraction of metal from its oxide by reduction with carbon. The calcined ore is reduced with carbon, i.e smelted in a blast furnace made of steel and lined with fire bricks. It is narrow at top and bottom which allows proper flow of materials.
For example: Iron is extracted from its ore, by making it react with carbon called as the process of smelting.
