Smooth endoplasmic reticulum doesnt play any role in synthesizing protein because , for synthesizing protein presence of ribosomes is necessary but it doesnt have ribosome as it consists of tubules . It helps in lipid and steroid synthesis.
RER have cistarne and vesicles which have ribosomes attached to it , so they help in protein synthesis.
